In April 2015, my 14yo big 17.2 hand Irish Sport Horse Mr Nodz had a disastrous paddock accident and was almost non weight bearing lame in his hindleg, with marked pain through his back, and he was sweating and distressed for days.  After X-rays and a Scintigraphy scan, I was told at best he might be able to be a paddock ornament.

Then we visited Dr Melanie Quick 3 weeks later, she wasn’t convinced with the diagnosis and said that if I was prepared to work with her we could give his treatment and recovery  ‘a red hot go’ with the aim to making his retirement more comfortable.  Dr Quick said with the severity of the injury it would be a miracle if he returned to work.

Dr Quick xrayed and ultrasound scanned his stifle to confirm her suspicions, and elected to try joint injections and anti-arthritics, she adjusted his back and gave me a rehab program to start after a 5 month rest.

As soon as the treatment started Mr Nodz rapidly became less painful, and now he is not only fully recovered, but is BACK IN WORK and is so cheeky (still working and now it’s Jan 2017!).  I can’t believe he is now barefoot and moving better than ever (I was always too scared to try this on him due to his size).  He is more supple and cooperative than ever before.

I can’t thank Melanie enough for her effort and determination to give him a RED HOT GO.  Nodz thinks she is special! I cannot speak more highly of Dr Quick.

We took our Labradoodle dog, Ollie, to see Mel, concerned about his rear legs. During his walks he would often kick out, like a donkey, and his back legs would twitch. Afterwards, he would struggle to stand, often limping and in pain.

Upon examination and X-rays he was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia. At only 14 months old, we were devastated. Our options were lifelong NSAID medication (which weren’t really working anyway), surgery to cut the nerves to his hips and eventually total hip replacements.

Mel told us about Regenerative Medicine joint injections into the hips.  She’d had a lot of success with horses but had not done many dogs, so this was an experimental option.  It’s done using Ollie’s own blood and is all natural with less risk than drugs or surgery, so we opted to try.

The results were amazing!  After only one injection Ollie was a different dog. He was leaping about, running, his tail didn’t stop wagging. He had a real bounce in his step, not the awkward shuffle we were used to seeing.  Prior to the treatment he was always a calm, quiet sort of young dog, now he plays as hard as the others.  We were very impressed with the outcome.

Mel has pointed out that she cannot predict how long these injections will continue to be effective. Ollie will require a ‘top up’ at some stage but only ‘time will tell’, so far it’s been 5 months and he is still a new dog.  As far as we’re concerned, we’re glad we chose this option. It is a more natural option, using the dogs own blood, rather than medication or surgery.

We are hopeful that Regenerative Medicine will continue to help Ollie live a pain free life.

Thanks Mel.
